CEA test in Banur

A CEA test measures carcinoembryonic antigen, a protein made in the gut of a developing baby that adults carry only in tiny amounts. Its main use is in people already diagnosed with bowel (colorectal) cancer: before surgery, during treatment and in the years of follow-up. It is not a way to check healthy people for cancer.

What the CEA test checks

CEA is a glycoprotein, reported in ng/mL. Some tumours of the bowel, rectum, stomach, pancreas, lung, breast and thyroid release it into the blood. So do inflamed tissues in several non-cancer conditions, which is why a single raised CEA can't say where, or whether, cancer is present.

Why your doctor may order it

  • a baseline level before surgery for bowel cancer, which helps judge the outlook and sets a reference point;
  • checking how well treatment is working;
  • regular follow-up after treatment, often every few months at first, to pick up a rise early;
  • sometimes with other markers to help work out the origin of a growth already found on a scan.

The trend matters. Doctors look at whether the level is climbing across two or three readings, ideally done at the same lab with the same method.

How to prepare

No fasting needed. Smoking raises CEA, so tell us if you smoke; it helps your doctor interpret a borderline number. Mention any high-dose biotin supplement, since some immunoassays are affected by it.

Sample type and report time

One serum sample from the arm. It's collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. Plan on usually 1–3 working days; we'll tell you the expected date when you book.

For patients tired out by treatment, home sample collection can save the trip. Arrange it on 8872524007.

Understanding your results

Many labs quote an upper limit of about 3 to 5 ng/mL, and smokers can sit a little higher. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, since ranges vary by lab and method.

Higher CEA can be associated with colorectal and some other cancers, but also with smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, liver disease such as cirrhosis, lung infections and an underactive thyroid. Some bowel cancers never raise CEA at all. Your doctor reads it with your scans, colonoscopy findings and previous CEA values.

FAQ

Can a CEA test detect cancer early?

No. It isn't sensitive or specific enough to screen healthy people. Its value is in tracking known disease over time.

Does smoking affect CEA?

Yes. Smokers often have mildly higher CEA than non-smokers, so tell your doctor if you smoke.

Where can I get a cea test near me in Banur?

If you're searching for a cea test near me, give the sample at our lab on M.C. Road, Banur, or book home collection in Banur and nearby villages.

Why should I do repeat CEA tests at the same lab?

Different methods can give slightly different numbers. Using one lab makes it easier for your doctor to see a real change.
