When doctors order these tests
Seasonal fever. For high fever with body ache, doctors usually start with the Fever Profile. In the first five days the dengue test (NS1) works best; dengue antibodies come later. A malaria test suits fever with chills. A Widal test is more useful after the first week. Severe joint pain points towards a chikungunya test, and fever after working in fields or tall grass may need a scrub typhus test.
How serious is the infection? A CRP test shows inflammation. A procalcitonin test helps hospital doctors judge bacterial infection and sepsis. A blood culture grows the actual bacteria and shows which antibiotics work.
Screening. HIV, HBsAg for hepatitis B, anti-HCV for hepatitis C and VDRL for syphilis are routine in pregnancy and before surgery. These results are confidential and given only to the patient. The TB Gold (QuantiFERON) blood test looks for latent TB.
Dengue warning signs need a hospital, not a lab: severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding gums or nose, drowsiness, fast breathing or very little urine.
Preparation
None of these tests needs fasting. Tell us the day your fever began, any antibiotics or antimalarials taken, and past typhoid or vaccines. Give culture samples before antibiotics where your doctor agrees. Call before coming for blood culture, procalcitonin or TB Gold; some are processed at a partner reference laboratory and take 1–3 working days. Questions? Ring 8872524007.
Packages that include them
The Fever Profile bundles CBC, malaria, Widal or Typhidot, dengue NS1, CRP and urine routine. For a yearly check-up rather than a fever, see the Full Body Checkup.
FAQ
Which fever test should I do first?
It depends on the day of fever and your symptoms. In the first few days many doctors order the Fever Profile or dengue NS1; typhoid antibody tests make more sense after about a week.
Do I need to fast for a fever test?
No. Eat and drink normally, and keep up fluids, especially with suspected dengue.
How fast will I get my report?
Most routine fever tests are ready the same day if the sample reaches us by about 11 am. Cultures take longer.
Are HIV and hepatitis results kept private?
Yes. Reports are given only to the patient, or to someone the patient names in writing.
