Haematology and blood count tests in Banur

Haematology is the study of blood itself: the red cells that carry oxygen, the white cells that fight infection, the platelets that plug a cut, and the proteins that make blood clot. The CBC test is the one most people know, and it is usually the first blood test a doctor writes on the slip. Alpha Laboratory on M.C. Road, Banur has been doing these tests since 2014, and most of them need no fasting at all.

When doctors order these tests

Tiredness, pale skin or breathlessness on stairs usually leads to a CBC test or a single hemoglobin test. A fever that won't settle, especially in the monsoon dengue months, means repeated platelet checks with a platelet count test. Joint pain or a long-running infection often gets an ESR test alongside it.

When the counts look odd, the next step is a peripheral smear test, where the reporting pathologist looks at your cells under a microscope. A reticulocyte count test shows whether the bone marrow is keeping up. For anaemia that needs working out properly, the anaemia profile groups the useful tests together.

Clotting has its own set. People on warfarin need a regular PT INR test. Surgeons often ask for APTT and bleeding time and clotting time before an operation, and a D-dimer test helps doctors rule out a clot.

Some tests answer one-off questions: a blood group test for pregnancy, a job form or a licence; G6PD before certain malaria medicines; the Coombs test in pregnancy and in haemolysis; and Hb electrophoresis or the sickling test when a family wants to know about thalassaemia or sickle cell trait.

Preparation

Good news for most patients: blood counts, ESR, blood group and clotting tests don't need fasting. Eat normally, drink water and come at any time during opening hours.

A few exceptions are worth knowing. If the doctor has added iron or sugar tests to the same slip, come in the morning before breakfast. If you take warfarin, heparin, aspirin or clopidogrel, tell us at the counter, because they change clotting results. If you have had a blood transfusion in the last three months, mention it before G6PD, Hb electrophoresis or sickling tests. More tips are in our preparation guide.

Packages that include them

The CBC is part of the Basic Health Check, Full Body Checkup and Women's Health packages. If your doctor has asked for a CBC plus sugar, liver and kidney tests, a package can be simpler than booking each test on its own.

FAQ

Do I need to fast for a CBC test?

No. A CBC can be done after a normal meal. Fast only if other tests on the same slip need it.

How soon will my blood count report be ready?

Routine counts, ESR and blood group are usually ready the same day if the sample is given by about 11 am. Hb electrophoresis goes to a partner reference laboratory and takes longer.

Can you collect these samples at home?

Yes, for most of them. Bleeding time and clotting time must be done at the lab because they are timed on the spot.

Is the price the same for every test in this list?

No. Call or WhatsApp for the current price of the tests on your slip.
