When doctors order these tests
Gynaecologists and fertility doctors order most of them. A beta hCG test confirms and tracks early pregnancy. Irregular periods or trouble conceiving usually lead to an FSH test, an LH test, an estradiol test, a prolactin test and sometimes an AMH test for ovarian reserve. A day-21 progesterone test checks whether ovulation happened.
Acne, excess facial hair and irregular cycles often point to the PCOD / PCOS profile, with DHEA-S added to look at the adrenal glands. Men are not left out: a testosterone test is common for low energy or low libido. Physicians order cortisol for adrenal problems and PTH when calcium is abnormal.
In pregnancy, the double marker test and the triple marker test screen for the chance of certain chromosomal conditions, and the TORCH panel looks for infections that can affect the baby.
Preparation
Most of these tests don't need fasting. Timing matters far more:
- FSH, LH and baseline estradiol: day 2 to 5 of the period, unless your doctor says otherwise.
- Progesterone: about 7 days before the next expected period (day 21 of a 28-day cycle).
- Cortisol and testosterone: early morning, ideally before 10 am. Prolactin: a couple of hours after waking, after sitting quietly.
- Double marker: 11 weeks to 13 weeks 6 days, with your NT scan report. Triple marker: about 15 to 20 weeks, with your dating scan.
Hormone tests run on immunoassays, which high-dose biotin (hair and nail supplements) can upset. Tell us if you take it, and ask your doctor about a gap before the sample.
Packages that include them
Our health checkup packages focus on general health, so they don't include these hormones. The PCOD / PCOS profile is the closest thing to a ready panel here. If your doctor has listed several hormones, we can collect them together in one visit. Message us through the contact page with a photo of the slip.
FAQ
Is a pregnancy blood test more accurate than a urine kit?
It's more sensitive and gives a number rather than a line, so it can pick up pregnancy a little earlier. The number also lets your doctor compare two results 48 hours apart.
Can I give several hormone tests on the same day?
Yes, if they share the same timing. If one needs day 3 and another day 21, you'll need two visits.
Do I need to fast for hormone tests?
Usually not. The exception is a profile that also checks sugar or insulin, which needs an overnight fast.
Are any of these tests sent to another lab?
Some, such as AMH, PTH, DHEA-S, TORCH and the marker tests, are processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. We'll give you the expected report date when you book.
