What the PTH test checks
There are four small parathyroid glands in the neck, behind the thyroid. They release parathyroid hormone whenever blood calcium drops. PTH then pulls calcium from bone, tells the kidneys to hold on to calcium, and helps activate vitamin D so the gut absorbs more. The test measures intact PTH, usually in pg/mL.
Why your doctor may order it
- A high or low calcium result on a routine test.
- Kidney stones, thinning bones or fractures without a clear cause.
- Chronic kidney disease, where PTH is followed regularly.
- Very low vitamin D, to see how the body is compensating.
- Tingling, cramps or muscle spasms after thyroid or neck surgery.
How to prepare
Usually no fasting for PTH itself. Many doctors order calcium, phosphorus and creatinine on the same sample, and some ask for an overnight fast and a morning visit for those. Follow what your slip says.
The sample is best given at the lab. PTH breaks down if blood sits warm, so we separate and chill it promptly. If you'd like it collected at home, ask us first. Mention any biotin supplements, as PTH immunoassays are known to be affected by high doses, and tell your doctor about calcium, vitamin D or lithium tablets. Keep taking your medicines unless the doctor says otherwise.
Sample type and report time
PTH is measured in EDTA plasma or serum, kept cold. It's collected at Alpha Laboratory and processed in-house or at a partner reference laboratory, depending on the test. The report usually takes 1–3 working days, and we'll tell you the expected date when you book. If you're searching for a PTH test near me around Banur or Rajpura, call before coming so the sample can be handled correctly. Home sample collection is possible only after we've confirmed it with you.
Understanding your results
The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method. What matters most is how PTH and calcium relate:
- High PTH with high calcium can be associated with an overactive parathyroid gland.
- High PTH with low or normal calcium is often the body responding to low vitamin D or kidney disease.
- Low PTH with high calcium suggests the calcium is coming from another source.
- Low PTH with low calcium can follow neck surgery or other causes of underactive parathyroid glands.
Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.
FAQ
Why does my doctor want calcium at the same time?
PTH is controlled by calcium, so one can't be interpreted without the other.
Can the sample be collected at home?
Ask us first. PTH needs quick separation and chilling, so a lab visit is usually better.
Does vitamin D affect PTH?
Yes. Low vitamin D commonly pushes PTH up. Your doctor may order both.
How long does the report take?
Usually 1–3 working days. We'll give you the expected date when you book.
