Lipid Profile in Banur

A lipid profile test measures the fats carried in your blood: total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL. Most people in Banur get it on a doctor's slip after a BP reading, a sugar result, or simply turning 40. It is the most common cholesterol test we do at Alpha Laboratory, and it needs an overnight fast.

What the Lipid Profile test checks

One small tube of blood gives several numbers:

  • Total cholesterol, the overall amount in your blood.
  • LDL, often called "bad" cholesterol, because excess LDL settles in artery walls. Many reports calculate it from the other values; when triglycerides are very high, a direct LDL test is more reliable.
  • HDL, the "good" cholesterol that carries cholesterol back to the liver.
  • Triglycerides, the fat that rises after meals and with sugar, alcohol and extra weight.
  • VLDL, non-HDL cholesterol and ratios such as total/HDL, worked out from the measured values.

So if your doctor asked for a triglycerides test, an HDL test or an LDL test on its own, the lipid profile usually covers it in the same sample.

Why your doctor may order it

Doctors use it to estimate heart and stroke risk. It is routine for people with diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, kidney disease or a family history of early heart attacks. It is also repeated a few weeks after starting cholesterol medicine, to see how the numbers have moved.

When the basic numbers don't fit the family history, your doctor may add a lipoprotein (a) test or an apolipoprotein B and A1 test.

How to prepare

Fast for 10 to 12 hours. Have an early dinner, then nothing but plain water until the sample. Morning tea counts as breaking the fast, even without sugar, because of the milk.

Avoid alcohol and a very heavy, oily meal the night before, since both push triglycerides up for a day or more. Take your regular medicines unless your doctor has said otherwise. Our blood test preparation guide has more on fasting.

Sample type and report time

We take a few millilitres of blood from the arm into a plain (serum) tube. Collection starts at 7:00 am, which suits a fasting sample. Give it by about 11 am and the report is usually ready the same day, printed at the lab and sent as a PDF on WhatsApp.

Can't come to the lab? Home sample collection is available in Banur and nearby villages. Call 8872524007 to fix a time.

Understanding your results

Widely used adult cut-offs (NCEP ATP III) are total cholesterol under 200 mg/dL, LDL under 100 mg/dL as optimal, triglycerides under 150 mg/dL, and HDL of 40 mg/dL or more in men and 50 or more in women. The range printed on your report is the one that applies; ranges vary by lab and method.

High LDL or triglycerides can be associated with diet, low activity, diabetes, an underactive thyroid, kidney disease or inherited conditions. Low HDL often goes with smoking, extra weight and high triglycerides. Your doctor reads the result alongside your sugar, blood pressure, age and other tests, and decides on any target.

FAQ

What is HDL cholesterol in a blood test?

HDL (high-density lipoprotein) is the cholesterol that travels from the body back to the liver for removal. Higher HDL is generally linked with lower heart risk, although very high values don't add extra protection.

Is a cholesterol test the same as a lipid profile?

A plain cholesterol test may report total cholesterol only. The lipid profile adds triglycerides, HDL, LDL and the calculated values, which tells your doctor much more.

What is the lipid profile test price?

It depends on the method and on whether it's part of a package such as the Basic Health Check. Call or WhatsApp for the current price; we'll give you today's rate.

Can I do a lipid profile without fasting?

Some guidelines accept non-fasting samples, but triglycerides read higher after food. Most doctors here still ask for 10 to 12 hours, so follow your slip.
