Semen Analysis in Banur

When a couple has been trying for a baby without success, a semen analysis is usually one of the first tests a doctor asks for. It's simple, painless and tells a lot about male fertility: how many sperm there are, how well they move and whether they're shaped normally. It's also used to confirm a vasectomy has worked.

What the Semen Analysis test checks

  • Volume of the sample, and its pH, colour and how long it takes to liquefy.
  • Sperm concentration (millions per mL) and total sperm count.
  • Motility: the percentage of sperm moving, and how many move forward properly (progressive motility).
  • Morphology: the percentage with a normal shape.
  • Vitality, if motility is low, to see how many are alive.
  • Pus cells and other cells, which can point to infection.

Why your doctor may order it

  • A couple hasn't conceived after a year of regular unprotected sex (or six months if the woman is over 35).
  • Past mumps affecting the testes, surgery in the groin, or a varicocele.
  • Before fertility treatment such as IUI or IVF.
  • About two to three months after a vasectomy, to confirm no sperm remain.

Infertility is shared by couples; testing the man early saves time for both partners.

How to prepare

  • Abstain from ejaculation for 2 to 7 days before the test. Less or more can change the count and motility.
  • Avoid alcohol and hot baths for a few days before, if you can.
  • Tell us about recent fever or illness. A high fever can lower sperm counts for up to about three months.
  • Don't stop any prescribed medicine, but mention what you take.

No fasting is needed.

Sample type and report time

The sample is collected by masturbation into a sterile container, ideally in the private room at the lab, so it can be examined within an hour. Don't use lubricants, saliva or an ordinary condom, as they can harm sperm. If home collection is the only option, call 8872524007 first; the sample must be kept at body temperature and reach us within about an hour. Our general home sample collection service isn't ideal for this test.

The report is usually ready the same day.

Understanding your results

Results are compared with the World Health Organization's reference values (6th edition, 2021). Lower reference limits include a volume of about 1.4 mL, a concentration of 16 million per mL, total motility of 42%, progressive motility of 30% and normal forms of 4%. Values below these don't mean a man can't father a child. They suggest the chances may be lower and further checks may help.

Sperm counts naturally vary from one sample to the next. One abnormal semen analysis is usually repeated after a few weeks to months before conclusions are drawn. Your doctor reads the report with your history and examination.
