What the Zinc test checks
It reports serum (or plasma) zinc, usually in µg/dL. Only a tiny share of the body's zinc is in the blood, and most of that is bound to albumin, so the number gives a rough picture of status rather than a precise count of stores. It is still the standard blood test doctors use.
Why your doctor may order it
- slow-healing wounds or ulcers, or frequent infections
- hair loss, skin rashes around the mouth or nails, or loss of taste and smell
- poor growth or delayed puberty in children
- long-standing diarrhoea, coeliac disease, Crohn's disease or bowel surgery
- liver cirrhosis, chronic kidney disease or heavy alcohol use
- monitoring people on long-term zinc supplements, or on high doses for other reasons
How to prepare
Give the sample in the morning after an overnight fast. Zinc falls after meals and is naturally lower later in the day, so a fasting morning sample is easier to compare with reference ranges.
If you take a multivitamin or zinc tablets, tell us the dose and when you last took it, and ask your doctor whether to skip that morning's dose. Don't change prescribed medicines on your own.
Sample type and report time
- Sample: blood in a trace-element-free tube (often a royal blue cap), separated promptly
- Fasting: yes, morning sample preferred
- Report: usually 1–3 working days. We'll tell you the expected date when you book.
Because the tube is special, zinc is best booked in advance on 8872524007. Haemolysis spoils the result, since red cells hold much more zinc than serum.
Understanding your results
Adult reference ranges are often around 60 to 120 µg/dL, but the range printed on your report is the one that applies, as ranges vary by lab and method.
A low zinc level can be associated with poor intake, diarrhoea, malabsorption, alcohol, liver or kidney disease and pregnancy. Inflammation and infection also pull serum zinc down temporarily, as does a low albumin, so a single low value during an illness may not mean true deficiency. High levels are uncommon and usually point to excess supplements or contamination of the sample. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.
FAQ
Why does a zinc test need a special tube?
Standard tubes and stoppers can release small amounts of zinc into the sample and give a falsely high result. A trace-element-free tube avoids that.
Should I fast before a zinc test?
Yes. An overnight fast with a morning sample is preferred because zinc drops after eating and through the day.
Is there a zinc test near me in Banur?
Yes. We collect the sample at Alpha Laboratory on M.C. Road. Call first so we can confirm the tube; home sample collection may be possible depending on the tube and timing.
Can a cold or fever change my zinc level?
It can. Infection and inflammation lower serum zinc for a while, so doctors sometimes repeat the test once you've recovered.
