What the Arthritis Profile test checks
Contents vary between labs and doctors. A typical arthritis profile includes:
- RA factor, an antibody often present in rheumatoid arthritis
- anti-CCP, the more specific rheumatoid arthritis antibody
- CRP and ESR, general markers of inflammation
- uric acid, raised in gout
Some doctors add ANA (for lupus and related diseases), HLA-B27 (for inflammatory back pain), calcium or vitamin D. We'll go through your slip when you book and tell you exactly what's covered.
Why your doctor may order it
- new joint pain, swelling or warmth, without an obvious injury
- morning stiffness lasting more than half an hour
- a single hot, swollen big toe or ankle, suggesting gout
- joint pain together with rash, fever, mouth ulcers or eye inflammation
- follow-up of a known condition to see how active it is
How to prepare
Fasting isn't usually required for these tests. If your doctor has added a fasting test to the same slip, come in the morning before breakfast; plain water is fine. Mention any recent fever or infection, as both can raise CRP and ESR for a while.
Sample type and report time
- Sample: blood, usually one serum tube and one EDTA or citrate tube for ESR
- Fasting: not usually needed
- Report: usually 1–3 working days for the full profile, as anti-CCP may be processed at a partner reference laboratory. We'll tell you the expected date when you book.
Faster tests such as CRP and uric acid may be ready sooner. Ask on 8872524007.
Understanding your results
Each test answers a different question. A positive anti-CCP test with joint swelling points strongly towards rheumatoid arthritis, while RF alone is less specific. Raised CRP and ESR show that inflammation is present but not why. High uric acid supports gout when symptoms fit, although many people with high uric acid never have an attack. A positive ANA test needs follow-up rather than a conclusion.
The ranges printed on your report are the ones that apply, since they vary by lab and method. Your doctor reads the results alongside your symptoms, an examination and sometimes X-rays.
FAQ
What tests are in an arthritis profile?
Usually RA factor, anti-CCP, CRP, ESR and uric acid, with ANA or HLA-B27 added in some cases. Check your doctor's slip, and we'll confirm when you book.
Do I need to fast for an arthritis profile?
Usually not. Fast only if another test on the same slip needs it.
