ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate) test in Banur

The ESR test measures how fast red blood cells settle to the bottom of a tall, thin tube in one hour. When there is inflammation somewhere in the body, proteins in the blood make red cells stick together and fall faster. So a raised ESR is a sign that "something inflammatory is going on", without saying what or where.

What the ESR test checks

So, what is ESR in blood test reports? It's a single number in millimetres per hour (mm/hr): the height of clear plasma left above the red cells after 60 minutes. Most labs use the Westergren method, a 200 mm graduated tube kept upright at room temperature.

Fibrinogen and immunoglobulins are the main proteins that speed up settling. Anything that raises them, such as infection, arthritis or certain blood cancers, will raise the ESR.

Why your doctor may order it

Doctors in our area often ask for ESR with a CBC when someone has:

  • a fever lasting weeks, night sweats or weight loss, where TB is one of the questions
  • joint pain and morning stiffness, to look for rheumatoid arthritis
  • headache and scalp tenderness in an older person (giant cell arteritis)
  • a known inflammatory condition, to see if treatment is working

Because it moves slowly, ESR is better for following a condition over weeks than for judging a sudden illness. For that, doctors usually choose CRP instead.

How to prepare

No fasting and no special diet. Tell the staff if you are pregnant or menstruating heavily, as both can raise ESR a little. Some medicines, including steroids, can lower it, so bring a list of what you take.

Sample type and report time

Blood is drawn into an EDTA tube or a citrate ESR tube, then set up in the stand. The test must be started within a few hours of collection, which is why home sample collection slots are in the morning. The reading itself takes exactly one hour; the report is usually ready the same day if the sample is in by 11 am.

Understanding your results

ESR normally rises with age and is higher in women. A widely used rule of thumb puts the upper limit at roughly age ÷ 2 for men and (age + 10) ÷ 2 for women. The range printed on your report is the one that applies; ranges vary by lab and method.

A high ESR can be associated with infections, TB, autoimmune disease, kidney disease, anaemia and conditions such as multiple myeloma. Anaemia alone can push it up, which is why your doctor may look at your haemoglobin too. A very low ESR is less common and can be seen with polycythaemia or sickle cell disease. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.

FAQ

Does a normal ESR rule out illness?

No. Many conditions don't raise ESR, so a normal result doesn't exclude disease. Your doctor will use it with other findings.

Why does the ESR report take an hour?

The cells must settle undisturbed for 60 minutes before the reading. Most other tests run on machines in minutes.

Can I get an ESR test near me in Banur without a prescription?

Yes. If you are looking for an ESR test near me in Banur, you can walk in, though we recommend showing the result to a doctor.

Is ESR included in a CBC?

Not usually. ESR is a separate test, so ask for it by name or check that your slip lists it.
