What the HBsAg test checks
The test detects the surface antigen of the hepatitis B virus. HBsAg usually appears in the blood a few weeks after infection, often before any symptoms, and disappears in people who clear the virus.
If HBsAg stays positive for more than six months, doctors call it chronic hepatitis B. Many people with chronic infection feel completely well for years, which is why screening matters.
The HBsAg test doesn't measure immunity from vaccination. That's a different test, anti-HBs.
Why your doctor may order it
Common reasons:
- Routine antenatal screening, so a newborn can be protected with vaccine and immunoglobulin at birth if needed.
- Before surgery, dialysis, endoscopy or a blood donation.
- Raised liver enzymes, jaundice, dark urine or unexplained tiredness.
- A family member or partner has hepatitis B.
- Before starting certain medicines that can reactivate the virus.
Fever with jaundice has other causes too, and liver enzymes can also rise in dengue and typhoid, so a doctor may pair HBsAg with the Fever Profile.
Hepatitis B spreads through blood, sexual contact and from mother to baby. It doesn't spread through sharing food, water or hugging.
How to prepare
No fasting is needed. Bring any earlier hepatitis or liver test reports and your vaccination record if you have it. If you're pregnant, bring your antenatal card.
Sample type and report time
A blood sample from the arm, collected in a plain or gel tube for serum. The report is usually ready the same day if the sample reaches us by about 11 am. It's handed only to the patient, or sent to the number you choose. You can book home sample collection on 8872524007.
Understanding your results
- Non-reactive (negative): HBsAg not detected. You don't currently have detectable hepatitis B infection. Your doctor may still advise vaccination.
- Reactive (positive): hepatitis B virus is present. A rapid card result is usually confirmed with a lab method such as ELISA. Your doctor will then order follow-up tests (HBeAg, anti-HBc IgM, HBV DNA viral load, liver function) to see whether it's new or long-standing and whether treatment is needed.
A reactive result can feel frightening. Many people with hepatitis B live normal lives with monitoring, and treatment is available. Testing and treatment are also offered free in government hospitals under the National Viral Hepatitis Control Programme. Ask your doctor about testing and vaccinating your family.
FAQ
Is the HBsAg test the same as a hepatitis B test?
It's the main hepatitis B test and the first one doctors order. Other hepatitis B tests are used afterwards to stage the infection or check immunity.
Will my hepatitis B vaccine make the HBsAg test positive?
Not in normal circumstances. A vaccinated person tests HBsAg negative; vaccine immunity shows up on a separate anti-HBs test.
Who will see my result?
Only you, unless you tell us in writing to share it. We don't give hepatitis results to employers or relatives without consent.
