Malaria (Antigen & Smear) test in Banur

Fever with chills and shivering that comes and goes is the classic reason to get a malaria test. At Alpha Laboratory in Banur we do it two ways from the same small blood sample: a rapid antigen card and a stained blood smear looked at under the microscope. No fasting, no appointment.

Malaria is caused by Plasmodium parasites carried by the Anopheles mosquito, which bites mostly from dusk to dawn. To book, call 8872524007.

What the Malaria test checks

Rapid malaria antigen test. A card test that picks up parasite proteins in the blood. Most cards detect HRP-2, specific to P. falciparum, and a second protein (pLDH) that shows P. vivax or other species. It gives an answer in about 15 to 20 minutes.

Peripheral smear for malaria parasite (MP). A drop of blood is spread on a slide, stained and examined. A trained eye can see the parasite, tell the species apart and estimate how many red cells are infected. The smear is still the standard method doctors rely on, and parasite count helps them judge severity.

Why your doctor may order it

Doctors ask for a malaria test when fever arrives with chills, sweating, headache and body ache, sometimes in a pattern every second or third day. It's also ordered when someone has travelled to a high-malaria area, or for fever during and after the monsoon, when mosquitoes breed in ponds, fields and blocked drains.

Since malaria, dengue and typhoid overlap in the first days, it's often part of the Fever Profile.

How to prepare

Nothing special. Come as you are, fed or not. If possible, give the sample before starting any malaria medicine, since treatment can clear parasites from the smear. Tell us if you've had malaria recently or taken medicine for it.

Some doctors like the sample taken when the fever is up or the chills are starting. That's helpful but not required. A home visit can be booked through home sample collection.

Sample type and report time

A finger-prick or a small venous sample in a purple-top EDTA tube. The rapid card is quick and the smear report is usually ready the same day if the sample reaches us by about 11 am. Questions about timing? Call 8872524007.

Understanding your results

  • Smear positive: parasites were seen. The report names the species (vivax, falciparum or mixed) and may give a parasite count.
  • Antigen positive: parasite protein is present. HRP-2 can stay positive for weeks after successful treatment, so a positive card after treatment doesn't always mean active infection.
  • Both negative: no parasites found in this sample. A single negative smear doesn't fully rule malaria out, and doctors may repeat it 12 to 24 hours later if fever continues.

Your doctor interprets the result with your symptoms and decides on treatment. Falciparum malaria in particular needs prompt medical care.

FAQ

Which is more accurate, the malaria antigen test or the smear?

A well-read smear remains the reference method and shows the species and parasite load. The malaria antigen test is fast and useful, especially for falciparum, but it can miss low parasite levels. Many doctors order both.

Why would my doctor repeat a negative malaria test?

Parasite numbers in the blood rise and fall. If fever keeps coming back, a second smear 12 to 24 hours later can catch what the first one missed.

Can I get a malaria test near me in Banur at home?

Yes. If you're looking for a malaria test near me in Banur, we collect from homes in Banur and nearby villages daily, and from Rajpura and Zirakpur by appointment.

Does a positive card after treatment mean the medicine failed?

Not necessarily. The HRP-2 protein lingers after the parasites are gone. Your doctor may use a smear instead to check response.
