Haemoglobin (Hb) test in Banur

Haemoglobin is the iron-containing protein inside red blood cells that picks up oxygen in the lungs and drops it off in the tissues. A hemoglobin test measures how much of it is in your blood, in grams per decilitre (g/dL). It's quick, needs no fasting, and is one of the most useful single numbers for spotting anaemia.

What the Haemoglobin test checks

The Hb test reports one value: the haemoglobin concentration. Machines print it as "HGB", which is why so many people search what is HGB in blood test printouts. It's the same thing, just the analyser's label.

At our lab haemoglobin is measured on the cell counter, so it usually comes as part of a CBC. That's helpful, because a low haemoglobin on its own says anaemia is present but not why. The red cell indices on the CBC (MCV, MCH) give the first clue to the cause.

Why your doctor may order it

Common reasons include:

  • tiredness, breathlessness on climbing stairs, or a pale face and nails
  • checking haemoglobin at every trimester in pregnancy
  • heavy periods, piles or a stomach ulcer, where slow blood loss is possible
  • tracking improvement after starting iron, B12 or folic acid
  • before surgery, and before donating blood

Anaemia is very common in India. The National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21) found more than half of women aged 15–49 were anaemic, so doctors in Punjab check Hb often, even without symptoms.

How to prepare

No fasting is needed. Eat and drink normally. Tell us if you've had a blood transfusion or a big bleed recently, since either can change the reading for a while. If you smoke, mention it: regular smokers often run a slightly higher haemoglobin.

Sample type and report time

A small venous sample in a purple-top EDTA tube. For a finger-prick screening at a camp the number can differ slightly from a vein sample, so for decisions your doctor will usually want the venous result. Same-day report if given by about 11 am. Home collection is available; see blood tests at home.

Understanding your results

The World Health Organization uses these cut-offs for anaemia in adults: below 13 g/dL in men, below 12 g/dL in non-pregnant women and below 11 g/dL in pregnancy. Children have their own age-based limits. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, as ranges vary by lab and method.

Low haemoglobin can be associated with iron deficiency, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, blood loss, kidney disease, thalassaemia and long-term illness. A high value can be seen with dehydration, smoking, chronic lung disease and, less often, a bone marrow condition called polycythaemia. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.

FAQ

Is the Hb test the same as a hemoglobin test?

Yes. Hb is the short form, and the report may also say HGB. Spelling on Indian slips is often "haemoglobin".

Can I eat before an Hb test?

Yes. Food doesn't affect haemoglobin, so there is no need to come empty stomach.

How quickly can low haemoglobin rise?

With treatment of a deficiency, doctors usually expect a rise within a few weeks. Your doctor will decide when to repeat the test.
