Platelet Count test in Banur

Platelets are tiny cell fragments that rush to a cut and clump together to stop bleeding. A platelet count test tells you how many are circulating in each microlitre of blood. In Banur it's the test families ask about most from August to November, when dengue cases rise and doctors want the count checked every day or two.

What the Platelet Count test checks

The analyser counts platelets electronically and reports them per microlitre (µL), often written as "lakh/µL" or "×10³/µL" on Indian reports. Many machines also print MPV (mean platelet volume), which shows whether the platelets are mostly young and large or older and small.

When the count is unexpectedly low, our team checks a stained slide by eye. EDTA, the anticoagulant in the tube, makes platelets clump in a small number of people, which gives a falsely low machine count called pseudothrombocytopenia. A slide review catches this, and a repeat in a citrate tube usually confirms it.

Why your doctor may order it

  • fever with body ache, rash or pain behind the eyes, where dengue is suspected
  • easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums or tiny red spots on the skin
  • before surgery or a dental extraction
  • on medicines known to lower platelets, or during chemotherapy
  • follow-up of a low or high count found on an earlier CBC

Important: if someone with dengue has severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, black stools, restlessness or cold, clammy skin, go to the nearest emergency department straight away. Don't wait for a lab report.

How to prepare

Eat and drink as normal. Keep drinking fluids during a fever unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Tell us about aspirin, clopidogrel or painkillers you've taken; they don't change the count but they matter to the doctor reading it.

Sample type and report time

Venous blood in a purple-top EDTA tube, the same tube used for a CBC. Reports are usually ready the same day if the sample is in by about 11 am. For daily dengue monitoring, our home sample collection team can visit Banur and nearby villages each morning.

Understanding your results

In adults the usual range is about 1.5 to 4.5 lakh per microlitre (150,000–450,000/µL). The range printed on your report is the one that applies, as ranges vary by lab and method.

A low count (thrombocytopenia) can be associated with dengue and other viral fevers, malaria, some medicines, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, an enlarged spleen, liver disease and immune conditions such as ITP. A high count (thrombocytosis) is often a reaction to infection, inflammation or iron deficiency, and less often a bone marrow disorder. Your doctor reads the result alongside your symptoms and other tests.

FAQ

At what platelet count is dengue dangerous?

There isn't one safe or unsafe number for everyone. Doctors look at the trend, warning signs and fluid status together, so follow your doctor's advice on repeat tests.

Can papaya leaf juice raise platelets?

Some small studies have looked at it, but it's not a replacement for medical care. Ask your doctor before taking it.

Is a platelet count part of a CBC?

Yes. If you already have a CBC on the slip, a separate platelet test isn't needed.
