Ammonia test in Banur

The ammonia test measures a waste product that a healthy liver clears almost as fast as the body makes it. It's a specialised test, ordered mostly for people who are confused or drowsy with liver disease, and for some very unwell newborns. It's also one of the fussiest samples in the lab, because ammonia keeps rising in the tube once blood is drawn.

What the Ammonia test checks

Gut bacteria and the breakdown of protein produce ammonia all the time. Normally it goes to the liver in the portal blood, where it is converted into urea and later passed in urine.

When the liver is badly damaged, or blood bypasses it, ammonia builds up and reaches the brain. The test reports the level in plasma, usually in micromoles per litre (µmol/L).

Why your doctor may order it

The main reason is sudden confusion, sleepiness, personality change or a flapping tremor of the hands in someone with cirrhosis. This is called hepatic encephalopathy. Doctors also use it when a patient on valproate becomes unusually drowsy, and when a newborn or young child is vomiting, floppy or fitting without an obvious reason, to look for rare urea cycle disorders.

If someone at home is confused, very sleepy or hard to wake, take them to the nearest emergency department first. A lab test is not a substitute for urgent care.

How to prepare

Ask us before coming. The patient shouldn't smoke for several hours beforehand, as smoking raises ammonia. Avoid hard exercise the same day and try to rest quietly before the draw.

During collection we ask you not to pump or clench your fist, because working the forearm muscles releases ammonia into the sample. Fasting is not usually required, but follow your doctor's instruction if they have given one.

Sample type and report time

Blood is drawn into an EDTA (purple cap) tube, filled, capped and placed on ice at once. It has to be separated quickly. For that reason the ammonia sample is collected at the lab only. Home sample collection isn't possible for this test.

Ammonia has to be tested within about 30 minutes of collection, so it can't wait for a courier. Call before you come and we'll confirm it can be run that day; if it can't, we'll tell you rather than take a sample that won't give a reliable result. When it is run, the report is usually ready within a few hours.

Understanding your results

Reference ranges for ammonia vary a lot between methods and are different for newborns. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method.

A raised value can be associated with advanced liver disease, bleeding into the gut in someone with cirrhosis, some medicines, inherited metabolic disorders, and sometimes kidney or infection-related causes. A falsely high result is common if the sample was delayed or not kept cold. The level doesn't always match how unwell the person looks, so your doctor reads it with the clinical picture, the LFT test and enzymes like SGPT and SGOT.

FAQ

Why can't the ammonia sample be taken at home?

Ammonia rises in the tube within minutes at room temperature. The sample has to go on ice and be processed quickly, which only works at the lab.

Is there an ammonia test near me in Banur?

If you're searching for an ammonia test near me in Banur, we collect it at our M.C. Road lab. Call first so the ice and the tube are ready.

Does smoking affect the result?

Yes, it can raise the level. Avoid smoking for several hours before the sample.

Does a normal ammonia rule out liver-related confusion?

Not on its own. Doctors diagnose hepatic encephalopathy mainly from the examination, with ammonia as one supporting result.
