What the SGOT test checks
AST lives inside cells, partly in the fluid and partly in the mitochondria. When cells are damaged it spills into the blood, and the lab reports the amount in U/L.
Because the liver isn't its only source, SGOT is rarely read alone. It sits beside SGPT in nearly every liver panel, and the two are compared as a ratio.
Why your doctor may order it
Most of the time it comes as part of the LFT test. On its own, a doctor may ask for it when following someone with alcohol-related liver disease, where AST tends to run higher than ALT.
It also comes up when muscle damage is a question: after a fall or crush injury, with unexplained muscle pain, or in people on statins who report aches. In those cases the doctor often adds the CPK test, which is more specific for muscle.
How to prepare
You don't need to fast for SGOT. The biggest trap is exercise. A long run, heavy lifting or a hard day of field work can push AST up for a day or more, so rest for 24 to 48 hours before the sample if you can.
Avoid alcohol the day before. Carry on with your usual medicines and let us know what they are.
Sample type and report time
A serum sample from an arm vein (red or yellow cap tube). We take care to avoid a traumatic draw, because burst red cells release AST and can falsely raise the result. The report is usually ready the same day if the sample arrives by about 11 am. We also offer home sample collection.
Understanding your results
The range printed on your report is the one that applies, since ranges vary by lab and method; many labs place the upper limit somewhere near 35 to 40 U/L.
The De Ritis ratio (AST divided by ALT) is often worked out from your report. When the SGPT test is higher than SGOT, which is the usual pattern in fatty liver and viral hepatitis, the ratio is below 1. A ratio above 2 is often seen with alcohol-related liver disease. SGOT high with a normal SGPT makes the doctor think about muscle first.
Your doctor reads SGOT alongside bilirubin, your symptoms and other tests. A low value isn't a concern.
FAQ
Is SGOT a heart test?
It used to be used for heart attacks decades ago. Today doctors rely on troponin, and SGOT is mainly a liver and muscle marker.
Where can I get an SGOT test near me in Banur?
If you're searching for an SGOT test near me in Banur, our lab on M.C. Road opens at 7 am, and home collection covers Banur and the nearby villages.
Can gym workouts change my SGOT?
Yes. Hard exercise can raise it for a day or two, so mention any recent heavy workout when you give the sample.
Do I need SGPT done as well?
Most doctors ask for both, because the ratio between them is more useful than either number alone.
