Amylase test in Banur

Amylase is the enzyme that starts breaking down starch, from roti, rice and potatoes, into sugars. It is made by the pancreas and the salivary glands. The amylase test measures how much is in the blood, and doctors mainly order it when they suspect inflammation of the pancreas.

What the Amylase test checks

There are two main types in blood. Pancreatic amylase comes from the pancreas; salivary amylase comes from the glands in the cheeks and under the jaw. A standard test measures the total, reported in U/L.

When the pancreas is inflamed, enzymes leak out and blood amylase rises, usually within 6 to 12 hours of the pain starting. It also clears fairly fast, often returning towards normal in three to five days.

Why your doctor may order it

The classic reason is sudden, severe pain in the upper abdomen that may go through to the back, often with vomiting. Gallstones and heavy alcohol use are the commonest causes of pancreatitis.

Doctors also use it with swollen salivary glands, such as in mumps, and to follow someone after a bout of pancreatitis. Many order lipase at the same time, as it is more specific to the pancreas.

Severe belly pain needs a hospital emergency department first. The test supports the doctor's assessment there; it doesn't replace it.

How to prepare

Fasting is not usually required for an amylase test. If your doctor has asked for other tests that need fasting, follow that.

Tell us about any medicines, and whether you've had alcohol recently. Several drugs and recent procedures on the bile duct or pancreas can affect the level.

Sample type and report time

A serum sample from an arm vein (red or yellow cap). EDTA and citrate tubes aren't used, because they can interfere with the reaction. Same-day report for samples received by about 11 am. Follow-up checks can be done through home sample collection.

Understanding your results

The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method.

A level of three times the upper limit or more, together with typical pain, is one of the criteria doctors use for acute pancreatitis under the revised Atlanta classification. Milder rises can be associated with salivary gland problems, kidney disease (which slows clearance), gallbladder disease, a blocked bowel or a perforated ulcer. Some people carry a harmless form called macroamylase that keeps the level high without any illness.

How high the number goes does not show how severe the pancreatitis is. A low amylase is rarely useful on its own. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms, the LFT test (especially SGPT and SGOT if gallstones are suspected) and often an ultrasound.

FAQ

Is amylase or lipase better for the pancreas?

Lipase is more specific and stays raised longer, so many doctors prefer it or order both.

Where can I get an amylase test near me in Banur?

If you're searching for an amylase test near me in Banur, our M.C. Road lab opens at 7 am, and home collection is available for follow-up tests.

Can mumps raise amylase?

Yes. Mumps inflames the salivary glands, which release amylase into the blood.

My amylase is high but I have no pain. What now?

Your doctor may check kidney function or test for macroamylase. Don't read too much into a single result.
