SGPT (ALT) test in Banur

SGPT, now usually called ALT (alanine aminotransferase), is an enzyme that sits almost entirely inside liver cells. The SGPT test measures how much of it has escaped into the blood. Because so little ALT is found elsewhere in the body, it is the single value doctors lean on most when they suspect the liver itself is irritated.

What the SGPT test checks

Healthy liver cells hold on to their ALT. When cells are inflamed by a virus, fat, alcohol or a medicine, the enzyme leaks out and the blood level climbs, sometimes within a day or two of the injury.

The result is a number in units per litre (U/L). It shows that cells are being stressed, not how much working liver is left. That is why a very high ALT in acute hepatitis can settle completely, while someone with long-standing scarring may have a near-normal value.

Why your doctor may order it

Doctors often order ALT alone to follow something already found. Common reasons include rechecking a raised value from an earlier LFT test, watching recovery after hepatitis A or E, and tracking fatty liver while someone loses weight.

It is also a standard safety check during TB treatment, on some antifungal or epilepsy medicines and on cholesterol tablets. Some doctors ask for it before starting such treatment so there's a baseline to compare against.

How to prepare

There's no need to fast unless the same sample is being used for a sugar or lipid test. Avoid alcohol the day before. A very hard workout can raise ALT a little, and much more SGOT, so skip it for 24 to 48 hours if you can.

Don't change any medicine for the test. Tell us what you take, including ayurvedic or herbal products, since some of them affect the liver too.

Sample type and report time

Blood from an arm vein goes into a serum tube (red or yellow cap). Results are usually ready the same day when the sample reaches us by about 11 am. Can't come in? Book home sample collection instead.

Understanding your results

Many labs print an upper limit somewhere around 35 to 50 U/L, and some use a lower limit for women. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method.

Mild rises, up to a few times the upper limit, are common with fatty liver and some medicines. Very high values, in the hundreds or thousands, are more typical of acute viral hepatitis or a drug or toxin reaction. A low ALT generally has no meaning.

Doctors usually read it next to the SGOT test and bilirubin, and your doctor reads it alongside your symptoms and other tests.

FAQ

Is SGPT the same as ALT?

Yes. SGPT is the older name, ALT the current one. Reports in India often print both.

Can I get an SGPT test near me in Banur?

If you're searching for an SGPT test near me in Banur, you can walk in at our M.C. Road lab from 7 am, Monday to Saturday, or ask for collection at home.

My SGPT is slightly high. Should I worry?

A small rise is common and often temporary. Your doctor decides whether to recheck it in a few weeks or look further.

Does SGPT go down after a raised result?

It often does once the cause settles. A repeat test is how your doctor checks the trend.
