GGT (Gamma GT) test in Banur

Gamma-glutamyl transferase, shortened to GGT or gamma GT, is an enzyme on the surface of cells in the liver and bile ducts. The GGT test is very sensitive. It goes up with almost any liver or bile duct problem, and with regular alcohol and certain medicines too. That makes it a good early warning, but a poor pointer to one particular cause.

What the GGT test checks

GGT is reported in U/L. It is found in the liver, bile ducts, pancreas and kidneys, but not in bone. That one gap is why doctors find it so handy.

The liver also makes more GGT when it is "switched on" by alcohol or by some drugs, even before there's any damage. So a high level can reflect exposure as much as injury.

Why your doctor may order it

The most common reason is a raised alkaline phosphatase. If GGT is also high, the extra ALP is likely coming from the liver; if GGT is normal, bone becomes the suspect.

Doctors also use it to follow alcohol intake over time, and as part of the work-up for fatty liver, diabetes and obesity, where GGT is often mildly raised. Some labs and doctors add it to the LFT test as a standard item.

How to prepare

Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before the sample. Even a moderate amount the night before can lift GGT. Fasting isn't required unless other tests on your slip need it.

Tell us your medicines. Phenytoin, carbamazepine and phenobarbital are well known for raising GGT, and so can some others. Carry on taking them as prescribed.

Sample type and report time

A serum sample from an arm vein, collected in a red or yellow cap tube. Same-day report if we receive the sample by about 11 am. Morning home sample collection is available too.

Understanding your results

Men tend to have higher GGT than women, and many labs print separate ranges. The range printed on your report is the one that applies, because ranges vary by lab and method.

A raised GGT can be associated with alcohol use, fatty liver, bile duct blockage, some medicines, and, less often, pancreatic disease or heart failure. On its own it doesn't say which. Read next to SGPT, SGOT and ALP, the picture gets clearer.

When the cause is alcohol, GGT usually settles over several weeks after stopping, so doctors sometimes repeat it to see the trend. A low GGT has no known significance. Your doctor reads it alongside your history and other tests.

FAQ

Does a high GGT mean I drink too much?

Not necessarily. Fatty liver, medicines and bile duct problems raise it too. Your doctor looks at the whole report and your history.

Where can I get a GGT test near me in Banur?

If you're searching for a GGT test near me in Banur, our lab is on M.C. Road and opens at 7 am. Home collection covers Banur and nearby villages.

How long after stopping alcohol does GGT come down?

It usually falls over a few weeks. Your doctor will decide when to recheck.

Is GGT included in a normal LFT?

It depends on the lab and the doctor. If you're not sure, show us your slip and we'll check.
